Program Description
The Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Business Services, through the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) (opens in new window), regulates the Gas Technician occupation. A certification structure is in place, under the newly created Regulation and Technical Standards and Safety Act. The program of study provides the knowledge and skills required to service today's sophisticated gas equipment.
All fuel certification courses offered at Mohawk College are accredited by the TSSA.
Mohawk College offers Gas Technician 3 (GT-3) training at the Stoney Creek Campus. GT-3 is mandatory, entry-level certification which must be completed by anyone wanting to work as a Gas Technician. GT-3 training includes TSSA Modules 1 - 9 which are prerequisites for the remaining certification training. Individuals with GT-3 certification work under supervision on appliances up to and including 400,000 BTUH.
The GT-3 program is 180 hours and is completed in 45 class sessions, 4 hours per session twice weekly (22.5 weeks).
Each course has 50% Theory and 50% Practical. In order to qualify to apply to the TSSA for the certification exams, students are required to achieve a minimum of 75% in both the theory and practical portions for each course as well as maintain a minimum attendance of 80% in both the theory and practical portions
Upon successful completion of the training courses you will apply directly to the TSSA to schedule you exams, which will be administered by the TSSA.
The purchase of books will be required.
When you've completed this training you can continue your education with the Gas (Fuel) Technician 2 program.

Admission and Registration
You do not need to apply to begin this program. Simply ensure you meet the requirements listed on the Admission Requirements webpage prior to registering.
Applicants with Grade 12, especially Mathematics & English are best equipped to handle the curriculum.
Experience working with gas fueled equipment is a definite advantage.
Interested in taking a single course? Provided you have the appropriate prerequisites, the courses in this program can be taken individually.
