Course Description

An innovative, 4-module dementia-care curriculum based on a person-centred approach to care. The curriculum is evidence-based, interactive, and practical. This course allows students to understand responsive behaviours, so that they can effectively and appropriately respond in a workplace setting. GPA also includes respectful self-protective and gentle redirection techniques for use when catastrophic behaviours do occur.

Course fee includes textbook. Students must confirm room location by visiting WhereEnCampus and search by CRN or course code.

Delivered in partnership with AGE Inc. | Advanced Gerontological Education (opens new window), this innovative course is required for students in Practical Nursing, PSW and PSW to PN. Students enrolled in Recreation Therapy, Palliative Care and Gerontology programs will also benefit from the skills taught in this course.

  • Introduction to dementia and person-centred care
  • Overview of the relationship between the disease process and a person’s behavioural response
  • Application of emotional, environmental, and interpersonal communication strategies to prevent and diffuse responsive behaviours
  • Suitable and respectful protective techniques to use in situations of risk
