Course Description

This course will prepare personal support workers to enhance their existing caregiving skills to include the period of life covering reproduction, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, infant development from birth through the first year of infant life. It will also prepare the graduate PNSW for working in a variety of situations including: public hospitals, private medical clinics, public health agencies, agencies and/or private practice.

Educational Model

  • Academic/theory education hours (approximately 500) completed at Mohawk College. Includes:
    • 100 live hours (via online platform)
    • 20 taped hours
    • Approximately 392 independent learning hours which includes projects, readings, etc.
  • Practical experience (approximately 500 hours) completed after the academic/theory portion. Includes a combination of observation, volunteer, paid work and additional online certificates which must be completed in one year.
    • 200 pregnancy and labour hours
    • 200 postpartum hours
    • 50 breastfeeding hours
    • 50 additional hours
  • A proctored exam

A mark of 80% or more is required for graduation and awarding of the PNSW credential.
