Course Description

In this course you will familiarize yourself with the theory of clinical pharmacology for anesthesia essential to practice as an Anesthesia Assistant (AA). Students will build upon their foundational general knowledge of medications and pharmacological principles to provide safe, effective and evidence informed care for patients requiring; general anesthesia, varying depths of sedation, and regional anesthetic approaches. Students will compare and contrast pharmacological agents and their use in: pre-anesthetic care, induction, maintenance emergence, and recovery from general anesthesia. Students will examine indications/contraindications, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics properties of medications commonly used in the delivery of anesthetic care. Students will explore the impact of anesthetic workstations and other devices and technology integral to the clinical practice environments where anesthesia care is delivered.
