Course Description

​​Long before the industrial era, humanity built with local and renewable resources. Ancestral techniques such as earthen construction (cob, wattle and daub), the use of straw as insulation, or massive timber structures all testify to this age-old know-how. Today, in the face of climate challenges, these eco-materials are being rediscovered and modernized. In this context, this training focuses on bio-based insulation materials available on the Canadian market. It offers a technical comparison of their performance against conventional insulators, based on key criteria such as thermal resistance (R-value), acoustic insulation (STC), moisture management, and carbon impact. The objective is to provide building professionals with the knowledge needed to assess and specify these materials within Canada’s regulatory and climatic context.​

This micro-credential introduces students to bio-based insulation materials used in Canada. Participants will compare their thermal, acoustic, moisture, and carbon performance to conventional products and learn how to assess and specify these materials within Canada’s climate and code requirements.
