HMNS10103 - Working with Exceptionalities
Course Description
Explore the concept of exceptionalities in children and youth including historical and theoretical perspectives and methods used in psychological assessments and treatments in conjunction with biological, psychological and sociocultural influences that contribute to our present understanding of exceptionalities. Identify common characteristics of a wide variety of exceptionalities using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Examine current treatment and resources used in the field of Child and Youth Care through case applications which address the complex needs of a youth and the development of a strength-based, culturally relevant treatment plan.This course follows a blended delivery model (a mix of weekly lectures and independent learning). Weeks that include a lecture component will be scheduled for Tuesdays from 6:30pm-9:30pm EST and held virtually through Zoom Video Conferencing. All course content including a link to the Zoom lectures can be accessed through MyCanvas starting on the official course start date.
