Program Description
The Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Business Services, through the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) (opens in new window), regulates the Gas Technician occupation. A certification structure is in place, under the newly created Regulation and Technical Standards and Safety Act. The program of study provides the knowledge and skills required to service today's sophisticated gas equipment.
All fuel certification courses offered at Mohawk College are accredited by the TSSA.
Mohawk College offers Gas Technician 2 (GT-2) training during the day and evening at the Stoney Creek Campus. GT-2 certification requires successful completion of TSSA Modules 10 - 24. These are prerequisites for future certification training. The GT-2 certification allows technicians to work unsupervised on appliances up to and including 400,000 BTUH.
The GT-2 program is 480 hours delivered in four parts of 120 hours each. Parts 1 and 2 must be completed prior to commencing Parts 3 and 4. The courses can be taken individually in sequence or Parts 1 and 2 at the same time and Parts 3 and 4 at the same time. Each part is completed in 30 class sessions, 4 hours per session twice weekly (15 weeks).
Each course has 50% Theory and 50% Practical. In order to qualify to apply to the TSSA for the certification exams, students are required to achieve a minimum of 75% in both the theory and practical portions for each course as well as maintain a minimum attendance of 80% in both the theory and practical portions
Upon successful completion of the training courses you will apply directly to the TSSA to schedule you exams, which will be administered by the TSSA.
The purchase of books will be required.
